图书简介
This book brings together the most up-to-date knowledge about the role of cholesterol in regulation of ion channels and receptors and the pathological implications of these effects. It provides a comprehensive critical overview of the field comprised of three sections focusing on: (I) II.燙holesterol regulation of membrane properties, (II) Cholesterol regulation of ion channels and (III) Cholesterol regulation of receptors. In Part I, the chapters introduce the topic of heterogeneity of cholesterol distribution in biological membranes, as well as physical and biological implications of the formation of cholesterol-rich membrane domains. This part is essential for a thorough understanding of the mechanisms by which cholesterol regulates membrane proteins, many which are based on segregation of the proteins to different membrane domains. Part II of the book includes chapters that will discuss the latest insights into the mechanisms underlying cholesterol sensitivities of ion channels, such as regulation of the channels by cholesterol as boundary lipid, a role of membrane deformation and hydrophobic mismatch and a role of membrane domains, as well as the first insights into the structural determinants of the regulation of ion channels to cholesterol. Moreover, this section includes chapters that describe the impact of cholesterol on several major types of ion channels and the impact of this regulation on channel function in different physiological systems. Part III of the book includes chapters discussing the latest developments in cholesterol regulation of different receptors including G-protein coupled receptors, LDL and scavenger receptors and receptors of the innate immune system. Taken together, these three parts allow the reader to gain a thorough knowledge of the current ideas and breakthrough discoveries, as well as of the controversies in the field of cholesterol regulation of ion channels and receptors.
