This is the latest edition of the second oldest textbook of pediatric surgery in North America. The editors do not offer a standard preface, but they do recount the fascinating story behind the first edition when Dr. Robert Gross decided not to furnish a second edition of his monumental first book. The editors note their desire to continue to provide a comprehensive textbook while slowly eliminating chapters of yesteryear that focused on areas of pediatric care that no longer fall under the practice of a pediatric surgeon. They do maintain a significant section on pediatric urology, although compressed into fewer chapters. The book was first published in 1962, with the most recent edition coming out in 2006.
