图书简介
Clinical linguistics - the study of speech and language disorders through the lens of linguistic theory and method - is an interdisciplinary field, bringing together researchers from applied linguistics, cognitive science, and language speech therapy to improve our understandings of language and communication disabilities. Distinct from the fields of speech therapy and speech pathology, clinical linguistics is concerned with improving our understanding of the causes of speech disorders through formal linguistic theory and with improving our understanding of the origins and patterns of language through analysis of speech disorders. In 40 chapters, the new edition of The Handbook of Clinical Linguistics considers all of the major topics in the field as divided into four sections, each focused on the application of clinical linguistics to a major subfield of linguistics - pragmatics, discourse, and sociolinguistics; syntax and semantics; phonology; and phonetics. Revisions to returning chapters will include increased consideration of specific speech disorders, of multilingualism as an aspect of clinical linguistics, and of connections to literacy. The new edition also includes nine wholly new chapters on Clinical Corpus Linguistics, Multimodal Analysis, Cognition and Language, Sign Languages, Clinical Phonotactics, Instrumental Analysis of Voice, Instrumental Analysis of Speech Production, Phonology and Clinical Phonology, Typical and Nontypical Phonological Development, Clinical Phonology and Phonological Assessment, and Cross-linguistic Aspects of Clinical Phonotactics. Editors Martin J. Ball and Nicole Müller are leading figures of clinical linguistics and since the early days of this field, they have been instrumental in driving research directions and goals. For this edition, they are joined by Liz Spencer, a rising figure in clinical linguistics. Their planned additions and revisions address the demands from the community for a greater diversity of research into the experiences of multilingual people, the analysis of sign language, and the behaviours of languages other than English through a clinical perspective.
