图书简介
This volume critically explores the cultural significance and fate of ‘the literary’ in the European and the Indian traditions as it traces the history of reception of works which have a deep hold on the lives and sensibilities of people across these cultures over a long period of time. The book grapples with the shifting ideas of the literary and its status in the West, and its links with philosophy, theology and history, by looking at culturally significant responses to the works of such salient figures as Homer and Virgil, and compares them with the way it has been understood in the Indian context, as seen in the many lives of the Mahabharata across time and cultures. The book grounds this comparative exploration in a close study of Kumaravyasabharata, a fifteenth century Kannada Mahabharata. It analyses the varied ideas of truth and time that influence the reading of these works in different cultural contexts.Part of Critical Humanities across Cultures series, this book will be useful for scholars and researchers of philosophy, literature, history, comparative literature, cultural studies and post-colonial studies.
