图书简介
This book investigates the origins of Butoh in postwar Japan told through oral research. Butoh is a gathering of voices, from the past and the present: Yoshito Ohno, Natsu Nakajima, Yukio Waguri, Moe Yamamoto, Masaki Iwana, Ko Murobushi, Yukio Suzuki, Takao Kawaguchi, Yuko Kaseki and Kuniichi Uno. Ten Japanese dance artists, performers and a philosopher reminisce and speculate about the future. Their words populate a question: what does Butoh mean, as an embodied art form, and how is it relevant to the transitional times of the contemporary landscape? Hosted by an artist practitioner, this embodied research project is presented in the form of a journey. It is a research trip to Japan, as well as a deeper inner inquiry, about the socio-political resonance of art practice, and how and why we make work with our bodies in the first place. The book maps out questions, meetings, conversations, impressions and reflections, an oral genealogy of Butoh, as the author attempts to capture a form that remains slippery, multifaceted and unfinished. This book will be of great interest to students and scholars in dance, performance and Japanese arts and culture.
