The book is divided into two main parts: I): the in-depth presentation of the available homologating agents working under nucleophilic, electrophilic and radical regimes and, II) the rationale development and application of these reagents in methodological organic synthesis. Particularly care is devoted to mechanistic elements determining critical aspects (e.g. selectivity) of the transformation proposed. Each chapter documents detailed applications of the described strategy to natural products and pharmaceutical synthesis with the ultimate goal of offering not only a pure theoretical background, but rather a useful guide for designing effective transformations and establishing solid knowledge for future advancements in the area. Analogously, at the end of each chapter, a concluding section summarizing the current status of the discussed tactics, is included with an eye towards new challenging directions.
