图书简介
It feels like a particularly vital moment for asking the question: what (or how) should an architectural education teach? What constitutes professional practice now, when there are so many potential avenues and forms of collaboration - with artists, technologists, scientists, etc.?  As these questions gain traction this issue of AD on Cranbrook feeds this discussion through tangible histories, theses and professional architectural work. The vectors that define Cranbrooks (and Detroits) role in launching modern design in America - between city and suburb, making and manufacturing, education and apprenticeship, autonomy and collaboration, to name a few - are as fertile and dynamic as they are problematic and fraught. And perhaps this is why they have been so wildly productive. Parsing these vectors will be the job of this AD, with Cranbrook serving as the epicenter connecting experimental pedagogies to innovative practices. Revisiting Cranbrook Architectures legacy is as much about that history as it is our pedagogical future - posing timely questions about some fundamental strictures we take for granted in architectural education. How do we best learn architecture, and to what end? Is architecture a body of knowledge, a way of thinking, or something else entirely? Is culture a form of curriculum? Are there limits to this radically experimental model, or new trajectories for it as we confront other radical changes to the way we work, live and learn? This AD will look back at Cranbrook while projecting its radical ambitions forward in to the discourse of contemporary architectural education.
