图书简介
This book provides practical activities, projects, and classroom routines that teach core math, reading, and writing skills outdoors. The activities are organized around three locations: the school grounds, the neighborhood surrounding the school, and local parks/natural areas. These outdoor spaces are generally available to teachers regardless of whether the school is in an urban, suburban, or rural setting. Getting students outside provides significant benefits even if the only available space is urbanized and developed. Expanding learning to the surrounding neighborhood gives students a stronger sense of place and belonging, as well as providing variety in activities, natural resources, and settings not available in the schoolyard. Venturing further afield to explore natural areas and parks provide students with immersive experiences in nature and fosters a deeper connection to the natural world. Organizing activities by location enables teachers to select activities that work best for their schools setting, available time, and resources. Activities incorporating math, reading, and writing will be prioritized in the book because these subjects make up most of the day-to-day instruction and are the focus of state testing at the elementary level. Studies show that teachers feel pressured to meet standards and curriculum requirements which can be a barrier to incorporating outdoor learning in their classroom. Outdoor or nature-based activities often feel like another subject to fit into the day. By providing educators with activities that teach the same subjects, topics, and skills that they are required to teach, the book will make outdoor learning attainable for educators. Activities such as writing stories based on cloud formations, collecting bundles of sticks to learn place value, using chalk to play word games on pavement, and writing poems to welcome the new season, meet learning objectives while harnessing the many benefits of outdoor learning such as increased attention, motivation, engagement, deeper connection to the natural world, and improved mental health.
