The Dune series of books is often compared to The Lord of the Rings for its scope, depth, and wide influence on speculative fiction, and much like the genre of fantasy would not exist as it is without Tolkiens work, the genre of science-fiction would not exist as it is without Frank Herberts. It directly influenced Star Wars and Star Trek, among others, and remains unrivalled after 50 years in the depth and detail of its universe, providing an ample basis for philosophical discussion of equal depth. Contributions focusing on any of the six books by Frank Herbert and/or the film projects by Alejandro Jodorowsky and David Lynch have been sought.
