This book offers new insights into the study of rock art and its role in the memorisation processes, social memory, and the passing of knowledge. Rock art is acknowledged to be a significant aspect of human creativity and cultural heritage, and this work explores its use in passing culture down from generation to generation. The book takes a multidisciplinary approach allowing us to visualise rock art’s entanglement with a broader range of material culture and people because such relations are pivotal to understanding the intersections of memory and rock art.This volume brings forward thought-provoking methodological and theoretical approaches towards the study of rock art and memory through perspectives such as landscape, gender, material culture and ontology. The book addresses a particular concern that archaeological research faces on all fronts: the critical use of ethnography to elucidate how humanity has used images made on rock to transmit knowledge.
