The topic of portable spectroscopy and spectrometry is relatively new. Typically, spectroscopic instruments have been large and delicate, and therefore confined to a laboratory setting. It will consider how field portables link to laboratory equipment, in terms of performance and capability, and what the differentiation between transportable and portable is. It will present the trade-offs as equipment steps from the lab via the field-lab (van or tent) into the most austere, handheld-only environment. Advances in photonics and consumer electronics, have allowed instruments to me miniaturized and ruggedized, so they can be used in the field. Its a huge advantage to take an instrument to a sample, rather than the sample to an instrument, especially in areas like emergency response, chemical spills, chemical threats, etc. But that advantage also applies to civilian applications as varied as scrap metal sorting, raw material identification in manufacturing and counterfeit detection.
