Optimization is applicable to many fields including engineering design, computer sciences, management science and scheduling, and economics.  Modern optimization techniques are usually heuristic and metaheuristic, and this book introduces all of the main metaheuristic algorithms and their applications in optimization.  This book describes 20 important meta-heuristic and evolutionary algorithms along with discussions and assessments of their performance in solving multiple problems from fields of inquiry and practice. Chapter 1 provides an overview of optimization and defines it by presenting examples of engineering optimization problems in different engineering domains. Chapter 2 presents an introduction to meta-heuristic and evolutionary algorithms and links them to engineering problems. Each of Chapters 3 to 22 is devoted to a separate algorithm. The order of the chapters corresponds to their chronological appearance within the field, and each starts with a brief literature review of the development of the algorithm and closes with examples of applications to engineering problems.  The steps and execution of the algorithms are described in detail, and pseudo code of the algorithm is presented, which serves as a guideline for coding the algorithm to solve specific applications.
