图书简介
We propose a volume for this series that would be entitled, Rock Magnetic Cyclostratigraphy, a new technique that uses rock magnetic measurements to detect variations in magnetic mineralogy that encode astronomically-forced global climate change (Milankovitch cycles). Detection of Milankovitch frequencies in a sedimentary sequence allows a high-resolution chronostratigraphy to be assigned to the rocks for calibration of geologic process rates and detailed correlation with other sequences. Variations in the magnetic mineralogy and concentration of magnetic minerals in a sedimentary rock can be a very sensitive measure of ancient global climate changes, more sensitive in many cases than lithologic variations. Moreover, rock magnetic measurements are relatively rapid to make and are non-destructive, leaving rock material available for other types of analysis. We plan a book that not only gives case study examples of the measurement of rock magnetic cyclostratigraphies, but a detailed how to of the method. We envision the following chapters for the book: 1. Overview of the technique: This chapter will outline the basics of the technique with some general examples. The applications and potential for the technique will also be covered. This chapter will be written jointly by KPK and LAH.2. Rock magnetics overview: This chapter will cover rock magnetic parameters and measurements relevant to rock magnetic cyclostratigraphy, i.e. how the measurements are made and what they measure. This chapter would be written primarily by KPK.3.
