The second, completely revised and enlarged edition comes up with entirely new chapters on bioprocess control and biorecognition assays. Central theme is the application of chemical engineering principles to biological processes in general. It is demonstrated how a chemical engineer would address and solve problems. To create a logical and clear structure, the book is separated in three parts. The first section deals with the basic concepts and principles of chemical engineering and can be read even by readers with no prior knowledge of chemical engineering. The second part focuses on process aspects like heat and mass transfer, bioreactors or separation methods. The third section describes practical aspects, which include, amongst others, medical device production, downstream operations or fermentor engineering. More than 40 exemplary solved exercises facilitate understanding of the complex engineering background and as useful gimmick a table for unit conversion is given as appendix.
