图书简介
A rethinking is needed about the relationships between urban design and care, as issues such as sustainability, inclusivity and ageing populations demand new modes of designing. The book aims to stimulate an exchange of ideas between urban design and care by engaging with the ways in which the skills of caring can become expressed through design practice to create urban transformation that adds to the conviviality and wellbeing among those who inhabit, and depend upon, cities. This book documents the diverse ways in which concepts of care and caring are shaping the design of urban environments. The editors bring concepts and practices of care and design into a closer dialogue with one another to explore the production of caring environments. The contributors to this book reflect the innovative thinking required in tracing the relationships between design, care and cities. Representing different areas of enquiry, from human geography, sociology and design studies to gerontology, architectural theory and disability studies, the chapters take the reader through recent debates on care across the human and social sciences, further enriching these through theoretical elaborations and international case studies on the varied experiences and practices of urban design, including the construction of hospitals and homes, the planning of public parks and transport systems as well as urban curating and post-disaster recovery. Care and Design: Bodies, Buildings, Cities connects the study of design with care, and explores how concepts of care may have relevance for the ways in which urban environments are designed. It explores how practices and spaces of care are sustained specifically in urban settings, thereby throwing light on an important arena of care that current work has rarely discussed in detail. By tracing the role of design professionals and practitioners from related areas in the cultivation of care, the book adds a fresh perspective to recent work, which has primarily concentrated on the everyday uses of caring environments, while leaving unexplored the ways in which the values of care may be actively realised through design practices.
