图书简介
Although we may not always realise it, monetary policy is of crucial importance for all our lives. Monetary policy affects the prices of the goods we buy, the prices of assets such as houses and shares, the rate of inflation, the interest rates at which we can borrow or lend, the exchange rates at which we can buy or sell foreign currency and it may well affect whether or not we have a job. By monetary policy we mean the decisions taken by the central bank to control either the quantity of money, or some relevant interest rate, or possibly some other related variable. Monetary policy has been conducted in a large number of different ways over the past few decades. Currently, in the United Kingdom, decisions on monetary policy are made by the nine-person Monetary Policy Committee of the Bank of England, which makes interest rate decisions every month to meet an inflation target which is given to it by the Chancellor of the Exchequer.  The aim of this book is to present an up-to-date analysis of monetary policy, with a particular focus on the United Kingdom. It considers questions about how it actually works in practice, and what it should do.  In addition, it also considers many of the contributions made by economists, both theoretical and empirical, which shed light on monetary policy. We now know a great deal about monetary policy, and how it operates. One of the aims of the book is to impart this knowledge in an intelligible way to those with a reasonable grasp of basic economics.
