From a global perspective that encompasses economy, ecology and society aspects, the sustainable management of wood biomass, or dendromass, in rural areas is examined here. Based on the results of two bioenergy research initiatives in Germany, AgroForNet and BEST, best practices for enhancing the dendromass potential and productivity are described, and the implications on rural economies and rural ecosystems are discussed. The results presented here have been gathered in the temperate climate of central Europe, but are equally applicable to other temperate regions. Throughout, the focus is on balancing economy and ecology, such that the extraction of bioenergy becomes sustainable.
