图书简介
This book is similar to the condensed physiology books by Linda S. Costanzo (Physiology, 5th edition (Elsevier, 2014), Physiology, 6th edition (Wolters Kluwer, 2015)), but with more colorful and elaborate illustrations. Students should find the illustrations and the clinical call out essay sections of this book valuable. However, many of the illustrations are exclusively anatomical or histological, without any clear connection to physiology. The authors claim these are a nod toward the increasing integration of multiple sciences into modern medical school curricula. Medical students, in particular, however, are likely to seek other books that integrate physiology with pathophysiology, pharmacology, biochemistry, and clinical diagnostics. Because the book is purposely intended to be concise and basic, much of its content is descriptive and states facts without explanations. It often will transition from very basic statements into complex concepts without explanatory connections. The authors will use phrases like A is affected by B, or B is importantly influenced by A, without any elaboration of direction, magnitude, relation to broader physiological processes, or any additional explanation. This conciseness on occasion leads to inaccurate statements (e.g. ADH stimulates sodium reabsorption in the collecting duct; water is reabsorbed in the distal convoluted tubule, etc.). Some of the figures are overly complex for the accompanying text, in that they contain elements (i.e. quantitative graphs) that are not related to or discussed. Because it is often difficult for students to understand the causes and effects inherent in physiology from descriptive statements of facts without explanations, this book is likely best employed as either a quick descriptive physiology review, or a physiology preview, for students who will eventually need a more comprehensive and explanatory presentation of medical physiology.
