The book provides fundamental and contemporary knowledge about various photovoltaic technologies in the framework of material science, device physics of solar cells, engineering of PV modules and the design aspects of photovoltaic applications. Furthermore, it introduces the reader to each aspect of photovoltaic technologies and the applications thereof in the context of the most recent advances in science and engineering. Moreover the book will give its audience insights in possible future developments in the field of photovoltaics. After an introduction to the basic functioning of photovoltaic technology and its advantages, the book will treat in detail several aspects related to light which is the energy source of all photovoltaic conversions. Next the device physics, design aspects and the actual functioning of crystalline silicon solar cells which are the most dominant solar technology will be explained. Subsequent chapters will introduce the reader to the device physics, design aspects, functioning and advances of chalcogenide thin film solar cells, thin film silicon based PV technologies, III-V solar cells and organic photovoltaic cells. This part of the book will be completed by a chapter about fundamentals and new concepts for future technologies. Since photovoltaic research is based on appropriate diagnostics a chapter will be devoted to characterization and measurement methods for materials and solar cells. The last part of the book will focus on applications of solar cells in PV modules, systems, buildings and various products. Consecutive chapters will explain and illustrate the design engineering and functioning of concentrator technologies, space technologies, PV modules and their manufacturing, PV systems and various applications. Finally one chapter will cover the topic of PV deployment in distribution grids to explain the use and issues of PV power in interaction with conventional electricity grids.
