图书简介
The book provides the reader with a basic understanding of what distinguishes plasma physics from other disciplines and provide both physical understanding and mathematical method to tackle most problems within the range of topics treated. In particular, it identifies and emphasizes the similarities and differences between plasmas and fluids. Specifically, it stresses the different natures of the interparticle forces which gives rise to the characteristic collective behaviour of plasma. Emphasis is placed on the importance of coherent, collective effects in plasma as distinct from short range collisional interactions which dominate fluid dynamics. This text is structured to reflect the development of plasma physics. Chapters 1-5 guide the reader through the underlying theoretical foundations of the subject. without application to specific problems. Collisional, entropy generating effects, associated with random elements amongst the interparticle forces lead to the distinctive fluid like behaviour of charged particles in a magnetic field - magneto-hydrodynamics whose properties are identified from basic kinetic theory and developed in Chapters 6-9. One of the characteristic features of plasma is the very large number of different coherent motion possible.  As a consequence, the general plasma in a magnetic field has a large complex dispersion relation embracing both bounded stable oscillatory waves and unstable growth.  These characteristic motions are reduced to a manageable set by limiting their frequency range, character - longitudinal, transverse - and the nature of the plasma - cold, warm etc., and form the material of Chapters 10 - 13. The remaining Chapters, 14-16, cover toroidal magnetically confined and laser-plasma Interaction deal with specific topics of great current interest and possible application, principally associated with fusion.
