The book will present case studies, based on thorough literature reviews and original research, about socio-economic issues that affect the management of marine protected areas in the Mediterranean and Black Seas. The chapters will be written by leading scientists from universities and national research institutes participating in the project Towards coast to coast networks of marine protected areas (from the shore to the high and deep sea) coupled with sea-based wind energy potential financed by the EU Research Framework Programme. The project started in February 2011 and will continue until January 2016.  Among the issues to be covered are: Stakeholder attitudes to MPA designation and management National and international legislation on establishing MPA networks Modelling oil spills and averting their impact on MPAs Assessing the potential ecological impacts and benefits of siting offshore wind farms in MPAs Ecosystem-based management and monitoring of MPA networks The book will therefore take a more comprehensive and holistic view of MPAs in relation to socio-economic issues, and will not be focused on fisheries and recreation which have been the main issues covered to date.
